After nine months of searching, Ryerson has found its new provost and vice-president, academic.

Mohamed Lachemi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS), will replace interim provost John Isbister effective May 1, 2013.

Isbister became interim provost in July 2012, replacing Alan Shepard after he was appointed president of Concordia University.

Lachemi started his career at Ryerson in 1998 as an assistant civil engineering professor. From there he’s been the department’s chair, graduate program director and associate dean. He was appointed dean of FEAS in 2010.

He also helped develop the Centre for Urban Energy, one of two incubators at Ryerson.

Janet Wright & Associates Inc., a recruitment firm that specializes in education, conducted the search in colloboration with Ryerson’s search committee, which was established in June 2012.

The provost is responsible for academic, budget, and planning initiatives at the school.
