As a Ryerson alum, I tried hiring a Rye summer student for a comp-sci/engineering related job. I sent out a job description to various universities including Ryerson's Career Centre. After three days I heard from the Ryerson staff. However, by that time, my inbox was swamped by Waterloo students.
As soon as UofWaterloo's career centre receives a job posting, they have a system where they are able to publish and have students apply directly. Applicants can also send their transcript which is linked to Waterloo's grade system. There is hardly any turnaround time from when the university receives the employer posting and when the students can apply.
To me it's unfathomable how a university 200 km away is able to out-compete for jobs which are down the street from Ryerson. Waterloo was able to take its approach to co-op students and apply it to the benefit of all its students. If Waterloo is considered MIT-North on reputation alone, how do Ryerson students even stand a chance when their resumes are received late? Waterloo student resumes are already honed from the co-op process so there is little delay in sending them out in the first place.

Instead of paying Smitherman, why can't Ryerson invest in a job posting system that benefits its students? And yes, I did end up hiring someone from Waterloo...

Brain, I wouldn't say you're biased since I haven't had an experience with you to say it.

Agreed that giving out passwords is not allowed.

What I disagree on is the way faculty and staff members treat students. What Jason and Dan did, was not professional and completely rude. Jason was lying right to my face and he pretended to be using the Policy 61 where as he was simply "impersonating" the student conduct officer as only he along with the student vice provost and Senate can issue a Notice of Non Academic Misconduct. When I told him that he can't issue this notice he referred me to the Chair where the chair himself had no idea what this was. The Student Code of Conduct is in simple English and if Jason can't interpret it then Ryerson needs to open up Writing Skills Test for staff members too.

Brian I would say faculty and staff members should go through a quiz on how to follow procedures and protocols that Ryerson has in place. Now these policies are implemented by Ryerson and not the students, so if Ryerson itself fails to follow them then expecting Students to follow it is the last option.

Regardless of what happened in EE, please, never issue a student a Notice of Nonacademic Misconduct yourself (except those allowed by Policy 61). For your reference here is the link you can follow http://www.ryerson.ca/studentcode/

Emma, you should also do a follow up on the issues that Eyeopener brings up. In the past you guys covered the story abt RSU being sued over their health plan and the prof walking out on students. It will be better if students find out the outcome so that they know what to do and what not to expect. Just a suggestion.

If I was being paid 171k/yeaar, I wouldn't even mind kissing Ryerson's a**. Going against Ryerson would be the last option. Sure it is a good place and is getting better every year cause you get a raise every year. No wonder why Ryerson wants to increase tuition fees cause they have to pay you for making life miserable for others.

I think, Arslanian was not in the wrong. Something similar is happening to me, I was never with a man, so I received a lot of abuse from everyone and was reported by people in the University trying to sabotage my work. In particular another phD student who was promised by my Supervisor that my work (my ideas etc.) were going to be given to her. So she sabotaged my work, I was intimidated by another student because my Supervisor lied about these to them, and he placed cameras against me and said I was aggressive. He did not supervise me at all. There is some kind of discrimination and I am pretty sure I am being bullied. Eventually he became really aggressive and I am scared at the girl who sabotaged my work as she looks at me really bad and I know she does met-amphetamines. Before all this happened, the first day, my Professor asked people to abuse me psychologically, by creating false accusations about me having had an affair with several professors in the Department and with my former boss. I was reported after the intimidation and the sabotage, and I was really shocked, although I had witnesses who proved that one to be wrong. I am really sceptic in believing this woman is not the victim, because I am experiencing the same on my skin. So never believe what you read guys.

Yesterday my Professor was being verbally aggressive. He insulted me so many times, and I remained very calm although I was really going to cry, these people are really sick. Of course bullying implies groups of people going against one person at the same time, thanks to the bully lying and discrediting them for everything. I think this woman was too naive and trusted the people in the environment, but it is really hard to fight against the bully, usually the victim leaves, if she stays/he stays it becomes a nightmare.

My professor will never apologize, but I am silently defending myself, by writing everything down.

Great post. Who knew he worked for The Eyeopener?
Just a tragic incident to a great writer and an incredible person.
My condolences to everyone that knew what a great guy he was.
Randy Starkman, you will be missed.
