Ryerson’s first CIAU qualified swimmer in 12 years was in tough last weekend at Brock for the swimming finals.
Marie-Claire Ross was unable to qualify for the finals in her events and her best swim was when she finished third in the consolation side of the 50m butterfly. With it she is now ranked 11th in Canadian university. In the race Ross set a National B3 Level record, a Ryerson team record and a personal best with a time of 29.84 seconds. She also reached her goal of being ranked nationally in the top 25.
In her three other races, the 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley, Ross was unable to get into her groove. In the 200m IM, the event which got her to the CIAUs, she struggles to a time of 2:30.33 and had to settle for the number 21 spot. That time was two seconds off the time she had at the provincial championships two weeks earlier.
She finished 21st and 25th in the butterfly and freestyle events respectively. She swam the butterfly in 1:07.93 and finished with a time of 28.79 seconds in the freestyle.
Ross was the only member of Ryerson to make it to the CIAUs and the Ram performed as best she could under the glare of media spotlight cast upon her. Despite being the only member of the Ryerson team at the meet Ross was able to gain enough points for the Rams to finish in the 20 spot out of 23 teams.
Ross also had the opportunity at the finals to be recognized for her accomplishments by being asked to hand out the medal for the men’s and women’s 4x200m relay races.
