Ladies get whipped

By Thein Huynh

Ryerson’s women’s basketball team battled Goliath and lost. So then they switched tactics and challenged David, but got their asses whipped again.

After winning two games in a row, the Rams lost both of their games at home last weekend, falling to the undefeated Laurentian Voyageurs 68-48 Friday night and 78-66 to York on Saturday.

The Rams surprisingly kept the game close in the first half against Laurentian, but the Voyageurs outscored the Rams 31-18 in the second half. Laurentian’s defence held the Rams in check all night, allowing only one player, Sandrise James, to reach double digits with 10 points. Centre Karen Ure struggled with her shooting but continued to work hard on the boards pulling down 10 rebounds.

York’s visit to the Kerr Hall Gym on Saturday was supposed to provide some relief for the Rams, but instead the 3-10 Yeowomen upset the Rams.

York brought a secret weapon — Ontario University Athletics all-star Karen Jackson — who dominated with 31 points and 11 boards. Jackson had recently returned to the team after playing basketball in Europe.

The two weekend losses dropped Ryerson’s league record to 5-9, but coach Sandra Pothier doesn’t consider them setbacks. “When teams walk into our gym they aren’t as cocky anymore.”
