Sports tour at Rye high

By Luigi Rosella

Another season of interuniversity athletics upon us, and this year Ryerson coaches and players are hoping to give their fans something to cheer about.

I’m not going to lie to all the first years and say that Ryerson sports teams are the Chicago Bulls of university sports.  In recent years our teams have been mediocre at best.

In case you haven’t heard, our school nickname is the Rams.  Hopefully this season, the Rams will be charging to the top of the OUAA.

Stuart Miller, the men’s soccer coach, is optimistic of the upcoming year, while his counter-part Jon Sanderson, the women’s soccer coach, is confident that the girls will win at least three of their twelve games of the season.

On the ice, long time Rams’ hockey coach Louie Carnevale hopes that last year’s suspension of two of his top players will be forgotten so that the team can concentrate on winning.  Carnevale kicked goalie Dave Dolecki and winger David Vigilanti off the team after they broke curfew on a weekend road trip in February.

In Kerr Hall, Terry Haggerty and his men’s basketball team are anxious to get the season started while the girls, coached by Sandra Pothier, are anticipating a great season after last year’s 16 wins.

The women’s basketball team was one of the highlights on the Ryerson sports scene last year.  They made the playoffs only to lose in a close game to the fourth ranked Western Mustangs, who went on to claim a bronze medal in the championships.

Pothier, in her seventh year as the women’s basketball coach, is upbeat and in a positive frame of mind about this year.

“I’m really eager to start the season after last year’s finish.  We have strong veterans and we’ve had some good recruiting,” she said.

Ryerson also offer men’s and women’s volleyball, along with several individual sports.  Figure skating is only available to women.  However, badminton, swimming, squash and fencing are all open to men and women.
