Coke machines squeeze into rez

By Mike Anthony

Not even small doorways can quench Cocal-Cola’s campaign to upgrade campus pop machines.

New Coca-Cola vending machines couldn’t be installed in Pitman Hall residence a few weeks ago because they didn’t fit through the door.

Recently the school has been in negotiations with both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to make one of the exclusive seller on campus.

But new Coke machines are mushrooming all over the school, including Pitman Hall.

The doorways leading to the common kitchen areas on floors six to 11 of Pitman were too narrow to accept the new behemoths.  So the machines had to be taken out.

“We installed a smaller version, an older model that came out last year,” said John Corallo, university business Services director.

The two-and-half-foot-wide, 350 found machines that dispense cans are quieter than their bottle dispensing big brothers, which are three feet wide and 700 pounds.

Liza Nassim, residence life facilitator, said that with the six new machines and two already on the second floor, Pitman students have enough of a Coke supply.

“We’ll have to wait and see if [the machines] are used right away or if it will take some tiem for them to be used.”

A Coke representative, who didn’t want his name used, said student demand prompted the upgrade.
