PACAR Chair wants more $$ for sports

By Scott Carefoot

Ryerson students contribute less money than any other Ontario university towards their athletics department.

However, if it was left up to Brian Jones, chair of the President’s Advisory Committee on Athletics and Recreation, the athletic department would receive more than the $49.59 each full-time student pays out of their tuition.

“I think all aspects of our program could be improved,” he said.  “More recruitment, more full-time staff, better equipment, better facilities.”

The biggest responsibility for PACAR every year is to decide on an operating budget for the Department of Athletics to be approved by Ryerson president Claude Lajeunesse.

There are 12 voting members of the committee that would decide whether or not to recommend an increase to funding PACAR is made up of six students and six non-student members.

The students are elected by their peers and each is a representative of a different aspect of Ryerson athletics.

Jones says it’s up to the students to decide if they want to raise their non-tuition fees to support athletics.
