Dressed up and no place to go

The Ryerson swim team braved the worst January snow storm of this century to travel to Sudbury for their first meet of this new semester.

The team waited at Ryerson for more than an hour-and-a-half for the bus that was to take them to Laurentian University for the meet last Friday.

Despite the delays and the treacherous driving conditions, the Rams arrived at the event intact, and were even able to turn in a couple of decent performances against the host Voyageurs and York University.

Veteran Shahriar Zayyani placed second in the 50-metre backstroke with a time of 30.66 seconds. He credited the team’s two-week December training session in Florida for his success.

“The camp was extremely effective because the team discovered their ability of how far they can push themselves in the water,” he said.

Swim coach Victor Delac said the training camp was important because it helps to prepare his team for the Ontario University Athletics swim championships at Laurentian next month.

“The key point of the camp was to get fit,” the first-year coach said.

“It was a huge benefit for the swimmers to excel in the water so they could swim in their best, top shape in the finals.”

Rookie Dave Quane celebrated his 19th birthday Friday in fine fashion, finishing second in both the 50 and 100-metre breast stroke, as well as the 50-metre freestyle.

The first-year aerospace student finished with six top-10 finishes and was named Ryerson’s male athlete of the week.

Monica Neumann swam in five events, finishing no worse than seventh in any.

The Rams will travel to Kingston this weekend to compete the Queen’s University Invitational.
