It’s just after the nomination deadline for the elections, and Dennis Loney and Rob Emerson, the chief returning office, are checking through a five-inch thick binder. They are checking each candidate’s nomination form to ensure that the student signatures and identification numbers are legitimate. Each v.p. candidate needs 25 nominations and each presidential hopeful must sign up 50. Do the math: there’s a total of 275 names and numbers to check. “I’d like to find the board members who passed the motion [to check each student nomination],” Loney says.
Every year election debates are a dull affair, with barely any students around to truly grill candidates on the issues of the day. We’re looking to shake things up a bit this time around with the first annual RyeSAC presidential and v.p. debate hosted by The Eyeopener, happening this Thursday at noon in The Hub on the first floor of Jorgenson Hall. This public forum will test candidates’ mettle, as they’re questioned on their campaign platform and what makes them the best person for the job of leading your student council.
