Candidates’ nerves set in as students go to polls

By Chieu Luu Luong

George Jacob said he’s feeling very tense this week.

He’s nervous because he is one of the seven candidates running for a position on RyeSAC’s executive.

Ryerson students will go to the polls Wednesday to determine who will run their student government in 1999-2000. Up for grabs are the positions of president, v.p. development and finance, v.p. administration and v.p. education.

Two candidates are vying to become RyeSAC’s next president. Erin George, 22, is a fourth-year journalism student who wants to push for both a tuition fee freeze and an end to fee de-regulation.

Her opponent, Elliot Salmons, 23, is a fourth-year theatre technical production student whose icus is developing the student campus centre.

Running for the position of v.p. administration are Jennifer Long, 22, a fourth-year nutrition student, and Amirmaking Aziz, 23, a second-year industrial engineering student.

Long wants to increase school spirit by boosting involvement in RyeSAC activities, while Aziz wants to raise school spirit by focusing on multicultural issues.

Students will choose between Jacoub, 23, a second-year industrial engineering student, and Cory Wright, 21, a third-year social work student, to fill the position of v.p. education.

Jacoub wants to unite students to push for a tuition fee freeze while Wright wants to work with the Canadian Federation of Students to lobby the provincial government for a freeze.

Vladimir Vasilko, 23, needs 50 per cent plus one of the vote to retain his position as v.p. development and finance. The third-year industrial engineering student wants to continue a tax clinic for students and take part in planning the student campus centre.

Students can vote Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at seven polling stations: two in Jorgenson Hall and one each in the Business Building, the Rogers Communications Centre, Oakham House, Pitman Hall and East Kerr Hall. Election results will be announce Wednesday after 8 p.m. at The Ram in the Rye and will be available Thursday morning on The Eyeopener’s web site.
