RyePRIDE makes plan for new cash

RyePRIDE will get ten times more funding from RyeSAC than it did in previous years.

Instead of getting $800 per school year, RyePRIDE is now receiving $8,000, because the former campus group has been designated a student service.

RyeSAC executive assistant Dennis Loney said approximately $5,000 to $6,000 goes toward the year-round salaries of the group’s two new student coordinators.

This year’s coordinators Carys Camari and Philip Wong are already organizing events for the upcoming school year — like an AIDS walk and a queer comedy cabaret.

They’re also planning a Halloween trip to New York City.

RyePRIDE, which calls itself “the queer voice of Ryerson,” provides counseling, activities, and access to around 300 books at their office on the first floor of Jorgenson Hall.

The group has 35 members who regularly attend meeting and over 100 others on its email list.

Loney hopes the student service will someday escape its one-room office.

“Hopefully,” he said, “we’ll move out of the closet.”
