Ryerson walks the United Way

By Christl Dabu

Ryerson students and staff put on their running shoes to step into a United Way walkathon.

Newly appointed chief development officer Gordon Cressy, a former president off United Way, led Ryerson through the walk.

On Sunday at noon, the group met at Lake Devo and joined thousands of other United Way walkers on their way to Nathan Phillips Square.

“We want to show the city of Toronto that Ryerson supports its wider community,” Cressy said, “and the wider community we hope will support Ryerson.”

United Way has set an ambitious goal of $62.8 million for its 1999 fundraising campaign.

Last year, the walkathon attracted more than 16,000 walkers from various groups and businesses, raising $400,000.

One of the few Ryerson students present at the walkathon was Alex Lisman.

“I thought this would be an excellent way to support a good cause [and] get exercise,” he said.
