This fal’s convocation should be a memorable one. As if the cries of relief from graduating students wouldn’t be enough to raise excitement, Ryerson has added Roger Moore to the equation.
Moore, a British film, television and stage actor, will be presented with an honorary doctorate at the fall graduation ceremonies.
Ian Marlatt, director of communications for Ryerson, said honorary doctorates are presented to individuals who have made significant achievements in their fields, or to other peple who have a strong commitment to community service. From that standpoint, Moore seems to exceed the qualifications.
Most famous to Canadians for his performances in seven James Bond films, Moore has been working with UNICEF to promote children’s rights for many years. Moore has travelled extensively in Canada, collecting funds for UNICEF and raising awareness of childrens’ rights. As a UNICEF spokesman and goodwill ambassador, Moore has travelled to several countries to witness UNICEF projects in action.
Ryerson will not be the first to honour Moore for his humanitarian efforts. Last December he presented with the Commander of the MOst Excellent Order of the British Empire Award by Queen Elizabeth.
After being presented with the honorary doctorate, Moore will address the graduating class. Last year ‘s honorary doctoral recipents will include film director James Cameron, former Toronto mayo Barbara Hall, and comedy producer Lorne Michaels.
Moore is currently campaigning with UNICEF and Kiwanis to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders by 2000. Moore will also return to the small screen this fall in a syndicted action show alled The Dream Team.
Fall convocation ceremonies will be held on Oct. 29th.
