Men’s soccer team gets kicked by Hawks

Ryerson’s men’s soccer captain Ivano Deluca had a hard time explaining what happened to his team on the weekend.

Against the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, the Rams gave up give second half goals and got slaughtered 8-0.

“In all my years here this is the most talented team we’ve had,” Deluca said. “Even when we were bad [in the past], we were never that bad. That’s why this loss is really embarrassing.”

One day before the embarrassing loss to the Golden Hawks, now 2-1-0, the Rams lost a heartbreaking game to the University of Waterloo (2-1-1).

After taking a 1-0 lead into the half, on a goal by Nello Deluca, the Rams saw Waterloo score twice in the second to claim a 2-1 win.

The second goal game with about 10 minutes left in the game, marking the second time in a row the Rams lost a game in the dying minutes. The previous weekend Brock handed Ryerson a 1-0 loss with a late goal.

Sunday, however, the Rams were never in the game.

“We got off to a really slow start,” Ivano said. “As soon as they scored their first goal, we kind of put our heads down. Then they scored two more goals.”
Although the Rams are 0-3-0 and in last place in the four-team OUA Central/South division, Ivano believes his team can still make the playoffs.

To qualify it will have to climb two spots in the standings in its seven remaining games.

“Sunday’s score was just ridiculous,” Ivano said. “But it’s still early in the season. We can hang our heads and play the season out and just have fun, or we can put our heads together and give it 100 per cent and make good things happen.”
This Saturday the Rams head to the University of Guelph to take on the Gryphons (0-2-2) at 1 p.m. Sunday they play the McMaster Marauders (1-1-2) in Hamilton at 1 p.m.
