When you play on a team that hasn’t won a game in more than three years, keeping the score respectable sometimes seems good enough.
Ryerson’s women’s soccer team is drawing optimism from the fact that its two games on the weekend weren’t over and clinched before the half-time break.
On Sunday the Rams only trailed the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 at the half, but two late goals by the Hawks resulted in a 4-0 final.
On Saturday, at the University of Waterloo, the Rams lost 2-0. The win bumped Wilfrid Laurier’s record to 2-0-1, while Waterloo is now 3-1-0.
“We have a reputation for being an easy win and some teams might think they can walk all over us,” said defender and co-captain Malia Herold, who’s in her fourth year with the team. “But we make them work for it. We have a positive attitude and don’t let them stomp on us.”
The Rams, however, are 0-3 and still in the basement of the OUA Central/South Division.
“The last few game have been against some tough teams,” Herold said. “But I think we’re impressing teams with more than they expected. We’re more of a challenge than they expect and that’s what we want—to create an upset.”
With seven new players this year, the Rams believe they can snap a losing streak that’s at least three years old.
Their next change is Saturday, when they travel to the University of Guelph to take on the McMaster Marauders (2-1-1) in Hamilton. Both games start at 3 p.m.
“We give other teams a chance to challenge and as long as we keep our fitness level up we can be just as good,” said Ryerson’s new goalkeeper Sabrina Hornick. “We’re still a relatively new team, with a lot of new players, and after each practice, we come out stronger.”
