If life could be controlled like a VCR, the women’s basketball team would probably rewind this season and start over again.
After losing 75-57 to the Concordia Stingers Friday, Jan. 12, and 63-54 to the McGill Martlets on Saturday, the Rams are on a seven-game losing skid. The streak dates back to their Nov. 10 overtime victory in the season opener against York.
McGill’s win over Ryerson was its first in the regular season, making it 1-7. Concordia is now 2-5.
“We need to re-evaluate and refocus,” said Eva Ain, who’s in her third season with the team. “Right now everybody has to get on the same page.”
With the losses, Ryerson is tied for last in the seven-team OUA East Division with a team they’ll host this Saturday, the University of Ottawa Gee Gees.
But a win against the Gee Gees on Saturday or the 4-4 Carleton Ravens on Friday could put the team back on track to salvage what remains of the season.
“If we want to play together I do believe we can turn this around,” Ain said.
Since the top four teams in the division are the only ones to make the playoffs, the Rams are at risk of ending their season early for the first time in four years.
But because seven of the team’s 11 players are in first or second year, assistant coach Richard Dean is more concerned with making sure the group plays to its potential before the season is over, rather than monitoring league standings.
“This team has a lot of different levels of talent and a lot of different levels of experience,” he said before Monday’s practice in Kerr gym. “We just have to try and get all of the levels to work together.”
