Muslim students out in the cold
Muslim students protesting a lack of prayer space attend a religious service in the Quad last Friday afternoon. The protest followed Ryerson’s decision to continue to ban prayer from the university’s Lower Gym. NDP provincial politician Rosario Marchese (Trinity-Spadina) threw his support behind the students, urging administrators to “find an adequate, timely response to this distressing situation.” The university said it is willing to continue to search for viable alternatives through discussion with the students.
RyeSAC to host art exhibit in Olive Baker
RyeSAC is looking for artists with works dealing with oppression for it’s first annual Expression Against Oppression Art Exhibit. The exhibit is tentatively scheduled to run November 29 and 29 in the Olive Baker Lounge. School nabs $120K in research grants
Ryerson received more than $120,000 last week from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to fund two research projects. The money is part of $17.6 million in grants to 33 universities. Ryerson received funding for a $60,000 research project on innovative corrosion detection in concrete structures. The second project the university received funding for is a $61,000 analytical lab to study mercury. The CFI, a Crown corporation, was created in 1997 to fund research projects at universities, colleges, hospitals and other not-for-profit institutions in Canada.
