POETRY ON CAMPUS

By Eric Emin Wood

Whether it’s by reporting for one of the campus newspapers, honing skills in the radio and television arts program, or getting on stage as part of the theatre program, Ryerson students are constantly challenged to explore the many facets of personal creativity.

The Live Poets Society was created to service some of this creativity, in the form of poetry.

Since 2002, this campus group has been promoting the Ryerson community’s interaction with poetry by having aspiring and established poets write, read, and share their work.

The Live Poets Society was founded by Karen Mulhallen, an accomplished poet and professor in the English department.

She gets help from Jeremy Morris, a second-year Communication and Culture graduate student who has been working with the group for a about a year.

“I do it mostly because it’s an interesting group of people to be involved with,” he says.

Tuesday evenings at 7:30, the Live Poets Society features an open-mic with a featured poet every two weeks. The venue for this year’s readings isn’t confirmed yet.

The readings have previously been held at Oakham House, but due to construction, that site won’t be accessible until the new year. This year’s first guest poet is Michael St. George, who is scheduled to read on either Sept. 21 or Sept. 28, depending on space availability.

Any student can read at the open-mic nights. All you have to do, according to Morris, is “show up, listen to the other poets, and read.” Keep your eyes peeled for their posters on campus for more info.
