RYESAC TRACK RUN A BAD IDEA, EXPERTS SAY

By Amanda-Marie Quintino

RyeSAC is organizing a trip to Woodbine Raceway next week, despite problems with student gambling.

“We’re actually not endorsing gambling, it’s just another student event,” said Cristina Ribeiro, RyeSAC’s vice-president student life and events.

RyeSAC is providing participants with a free racing form and betting voucher.Ribeiro emphasized that it was an all ages, wrist-band event and that even people who couldn’t gamble were allowed to attend.

“I, personally, don’t even gamble and I had a lot of fun there with my friends,” Ribeiro said.

Jon Kelly, CEO of the Responsible Gambling Council, said that he disagreed with this event.

His organization will be on campus in late October to educate students about gambling myths, problems and addictions.
