A Ryerson nursing graduate who died of SARS has been honoured by a bursary.
Last week, the W. Garfield Weston Foundation gave out a $3,000 award in memory of Tecla Lin, who in March 2003 while caring for patients of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-a disease that ultimately claimed her life.
The bursary is also named after Nelia Laroza, who died while working at North York General Hospital.
The W. Garfield Weston Foundation established a $75,000 trust to generate a $3,000 annual award that honours the “work and courage of nurses during the SARS outbreak.”
The award will go to an international nurse planning to work in Canada, or one working and planning to further their education.
The first winner of the Tecla Lin and Nelia Laroza Memorial Award was Jia Dong Kang from the University of New Brusnwick.
