DOUBLE LOSS

By James Mirtle

It’s certainly not the start Mirek Porosa wanted.

The Ryerson men’s volleyball coach watched his team lose in three straight sets to the York University Lions. The Rams were at York Saturday night in what was the first game of the regular season.

“You have to give credit to York,” said Porosa. “They didn’t let us get into any kind of rhythm. We’ve certainly got the ability, but we just didn’t do it. York responded very well and executed perfectly.”

Ryerson dropped a tight opening set 25-20 and never recovered. York took the next two sets 25-15 and 25-22. “We were much worse in hitting percentage,” said Porosa. “They were up at three something and we only had one. The offence wasn’t there; the service wasn’t there.” “We aren’t crying. The plans [for next week] are still the same.”

The loss came on the heels of the first Canadian Interuniversity Sport rankings of the year.York (sixth) and Ryerson (eighth) were the only Ontario teams to make the list. The Ryerson women’s volleyball team also lost their first game of the season to York over the weekend. In a series of close sets, York won the first and second (25-22, 25-17) before dropping the third to the Rams (25-18).

The Lions closed out the game with the final set (25-22) to win 3-1. Six-foot-1 rookie middle Brianne Koning led the way for the Rams on offence with 10 kills.

Team veteran Anjela Wilson and sophomore Tara Di Giuseppe picked up 10 digs.
