MEN SEARCHING FOR WIN

By Ryan Wolstat

Judging by their shooting percentage last weekend, someone may want to remind the men’s basketball team that putting the ball in the hoop is one of the most important parts of the game.

The team did not fare well in Kingston as the Rams opened their regular season with a pair of losses against Queen’s University and the Royal Military College.

While the Rams played relatively well defensively, their offence and rebounding fell far short. The team shot just 31 per cent from the field in the two games and were out-rebounded by a 75 to 40 margin.

In the 62-39 loss to Queen’s, the Rams lost the battle of the boards 40 to 18. Heading into this season, the last time the Rams won a league game was February 28, 2003.The Rams losing streak now stands at 25 games. Ryerson was also the only team in the CIS to not win a preseason game. Williams said before this weekend that he expected his team to start off slowly this season.

“We have a young team that looks great in flashes,” he said. “We’re getting there. We just need to become a more tight-knit group. Once we get that, we’ll be right where we need to be. I’m looking at another three weeks before we are fully in condition to play a full 40-minute game and that will change everything that we do.”

The team’s woes can’t all be blamed on conditioning, however. As a decent-sized squad, they should not be getting dominated on the boards. It will also be awfully tough to compete if players continue to shoot so poorly. On the encouraging side for the Rams, Ex-Sheridan College standout Geoff Proctor was particularly strong over the weekend.

The combo guard can play a variety of positions and stepped up with 17 points against RMC and 13 more versus Queen’s.Duane Benjamin and Sanel Sehic also showed some signs of promise in their debut.

The team will look to end its losing streak this weekend against the University of Windsor and the University of Western Ontario.
