Rye sister school may poach prof

By Rita Poliakov

Concordia University strikes again. Well, it might anyways.

Wendy Cukier, Ryerson’s assistant dean of business, is one of three finalists up for the position of dean at Concordia’s John Molson School of Business.

Cukier, who declined to comment out of “superstition,” could follow former Ryerson president Claude Lajeunesse, who jumped ship in 2005 after serving the maximum 10 years as Ryerson’s president.

The schools are similar in size and status. Ryerson’s business program, the largest in Ontario, is similar to Concordia’s ever-growing John Molson School of Business.

It has approximately 5,500 undergraduate students and 18 programs. Ryerson is home to 21,000 undergraduate students while Concordia has around 29,000.

“Ryerson and Concordia are very similar,” says Ross Perigoe, an associate journalism professor at Concordia. “In fact, of all the universities … Concordia and Ryerson are the closest to being sisters. Concordia has quality students, but this is true of Ryerson as well.”

Ryerson president Sheldon Levy said schools are always competing for talented faculty, staff and students. Cukier will be interviewed in Montreal Wednesday, Oct. 18. A decision will be made shortly after.
