Ryerson students may soon walk from the Ted Rogers School of Management to College station without stepping outside.
The city is considering expanding its PATH system, a subterranean network of downtown walkways. However, it’s not clear if or when the two PATH connections will be approved.
“The ball … is in Ryerson’s court,” Corwin Cambray, a senior planner with the City of Toronto said. “As Ryerson goes through this master planning exercise, it’s something that they should be thinking about,” he said.
The underground walkway would run through the parking garage on Gould and Victoria streets, cross Gould to the library or go east across to the former business building. A second connection would link Ryerson to College station, via College Park.
Ryerson would pay for both walkways, because it owns the land, Cambray said.
President Sheldon Levy said he hasn’t been approached by the city on the issue yet. “We have to make sure that it is accessible to all students and those with disabilities feel comfortable,” he said. “I would want to be absolutely certain given the times students might use (the PATH), it is safe and secure.”
Ajla Odobasic, a fourth-year film student, sees little benefit to a potential walkway. “I could see how it could keep you warm, but it’s not worth the money. Why not stick it out for five minutes?”
