Ryerson has finally announced a committee to lead its ongoing search for a new Director of Athletics.

The school also set a July 1, 2008 deadline to appoint a new director.

The position has remained vacant since February of this year, when popular director David Dubois was fired abruptly.

“We’re talking about a renewed focus,” said Vice-Provost Zouheir Fawaz, chair of the new committee. “It’s first and foremost about raising the profile of the position.”

The committee is a hodge-podge of six faculty and staff, three students and one non-voting member.

The student members are all athletes. The faculty and staff members include housing director Glen Weppler, volleyball coach Mirek Porosa, tri-mentoring director Liza Arnason, fundraising chief Adam Kahan and politics prof Janet Lum, an “avid RAC user.”

Porosa, who has coached Ryerson’s successful men’s volleyball teams for over 12 years, had rather high hopes for the new director.

“I’m looking for a someone who has vision, someone with business connections, a fighter, a politician, who is everything,” he said.

The school has yet to announce plans to replace interuniversity sports manager Terry Haggerty, who was fired along with Dubois.
