CREERY BACK FOR SECONDS

By John Shmuel

In a surprise move last week, Ryerson announced the recently controversial head of student services will be sticking around five months longer than expected.

Marion Creery, who originally intended to retire in May, will stay on until at least July when a new VP Students, her boss, is hired.

“I think it’s really important that there be a smooth transition from whatever structure we have now to the new vice provost students,” she said.

Zouheir Fawaz, the current VP students, said the school wants to continue to benefit from Creery’s experience.

During her 20-year tenure at Ryerson, Creery pushed to decentralize student services by moving staff and resources to other faculties.

Most recently, the organization was slated to lose the soon-to-be announced athletic director, which will be placed directly under the control of the provost and VP Academic.

Creery herself came under fire in February 2007 for firing Athletic Director Dave Dubois and Terry Haggerty, Ryerson’s head of interuniversity sports.

She gave scant reasoning for the firing. Student Services is a large department that includes workers in housing, financial aid and the Access Centre.
