Ryerson has announced who will be the next voice of the students in administration. Heather Lane Vetere will be a face Ryerson students – particularly those in residence – should get to know.
Next year, she’ll be taking over as Ryerson’s vice-provost students, a position responsible for recruiting and retaining students.
“We need somebody to come through and help us think about changes we’ll have to make in the future that will affect students,” said Alan Shepard, viceprovost academic. “And we thought she was superbly qualified.”
Vetere is currently overseeing a $40-million renewal project of the 13 residences at the University of Guelph, where she is the director of student housing.
She said she can’t comment on Ryerson’s housing. However, the president of Guelph’s residences expects Vetere to ease Ryerson’s housing crunch, which an influx of students over the next decade is expected to exacerbate.
“She’s leaving a legacy here of updating residences and making them more contemporary,” said Joel Harnest. “I’m sure she can do it [at Ryerson].”
Vetere will replace Zouheir Fawaz, who is leaving the school in June. While away, Fawaz intends to oversee the first PhD students graduating from aerospace engineering.
He also said he is reorganizing his teaching materials. Fawaz and Shepard have had several conversations about the outgoing VP’s return to Ryerson.
