SUMMER UPDATES: THE RAC’S FACELIFT AND MORE

By Erin Valois

While the Ryerson campus came to a standstill during the summer months, Sports and Recreation was busy making plans for the upcoming season. Here’s what you missed.

New kids on the block

The women’s volleyball team welcomed a new addition to their team this summer. Former OUA all-star Amanda Maze joined the team as assistant coach. Maze was captain of the volleyball team at Queen’s University for two seasons and held a spot on the Ontario provincial team in 1998. Don’t worry about Maze heading back to her old school — she also has roots at her new university. In 2004, she finished her Master’s degree at Ryerson in Spatial Analysis.

Head athletic therapist Lynn Kaak has retired after working at Ryerson for almost two decades. In her place is Jerome Camacho, a therapist with more than 10 years of experience. He’s worked for a variety of organizations including the University of Toronto, Basketball Canada and the Toronto Raptors. So the next time you pull a groin, just remember that he’s probably touched Vince Carter’s groin.

Get ready to party down because Mike Epp has been hired as the Athletics Event Specialist. His role is to assist the Event Coordinator at games and special events.

March Madness at Ryerson The men’s basketball team played host to two Division I teams on Labour Day weekend. The first exhibition game on Aug. 31 saw the Rams fall to Penn State, ending with a score of 102-68. Ryerson forward Boris Bakovic finished the game with 34 points.

The team’s second exhibition game was against Iona College on Sept. 1. This was another hard loss for the Rams, who have eight new players on the team this year. They were out-shot and out-rebounded by the New York college, finishing with a score of 100-56.

This was the second year the Rams have played exhibition games against teams from across the border.

RAC makeover

You’ve probably noticed the large tarp covering the main entrance of the Recreation and Athletics Centre.

With over 150 years of wear and tear, Ryerson’s facade is undergoing a facelift. The historic archway was built as part of the Toronto Normal School and maintenance workers are refinishing the stone walls.

Rams on the radio

The Ryerson Rams are back on the radio as University Sports Report started its second season last week.

The radio show airs on TheFAN 590 every Sunday at 9am and discusses current events involving Ryerson, York University and the University of Toronto.
