A former Ryerson student is banned from driving for seven years for his part in a street race that claimed the life of a Toronto taxi driver.

Wang-Piao Dumani Ross, 20, an arts diploma student, was racing with Alexander Ryazanov when Ryazanov’s car T-boned Tahir Khan’s taxi in January 2006. The taxi driver was killed instantly.

The pair were sentenced last May, but their punishment was met with public outcry for being too lenient.

Khan’s family filed a civil suit last year, suing Ryazanov and Dumani Ross for $1.4 million. The civil suit is ongoing.

Dumani Ross and Ryazanov were originally sentenced to a year of house arrest, a year of curfew and two years of probation. They were also banned from driving for four years.

But the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled on Oct. 2 that the men must serve the remainder of the sentence under house arrest and three years was added to their driving ban.
