A new law centre will soon be coming to Ryerson, and the research facility could pave the way for a law school.
“Once the centre is established, maybe the next step is whether Ryerson should have a law school,” said Tas Venetsanopoulos, Ryerson’s vice-president research and innovation.
On Oct. 6, Ryerson’s Senate approved plans for a law research centre.
While the space will mainly be a hub for faculty research projects, it’ll also be available to students in law-related programs such as business, criminal justice and occupational and public health.
“Five years down the line, it may be a law school,” said Venetsanopoulos, adding that no decisions have been made yet.
The centre is meant to be a resource for legal education at Ryerson. Students are encouraged to collaborate with staff on research projects.
The law centre could be active within a year, according to Venetsanopoulos. However, a location is still pending. “It’s a definite go,” said Avner Levin, law and business chair at the Ted Rogers School of Management. “We’re in the process of hiring directors, finding office space and applying for funding.”
Levin added that the possibility of a research centre focusing on law and justice studies has been under discussion for the past few years at Ryerson.
