Campus Planning head steps down

Ian Hamilton, the assistant vice-president of Campus Planning and Facilities, has chosen an early retirement.

Vice-president administration and finance Julia Hanigsberg made the announcement Monday.

Hamilton’s department will be split into two units, Capital Projects and Real Estate, which deals with Ryerson’s real estate portfolio,  and Campus Planning and Sustainability, which will be responsible for maintenance of buildings and custodial services on campus.

In a Ryerson Today post, Hanigsberg said the decision to re-organize was aided by Hamilton’s advice.

President Sheldon Levy said most universities have two separate departments to deal with real estate and maintenance, but that the two had been combined under the term of past VP administration and finance Linda Grayson.

“It’s most common that you differentiate the physical plant that way,” he said.

The university has hired Elisabeth Stroback, senior advisor of construction and real estate to Hanigsberg, to be acting leadership for Capital Projects and Real Estate.

Tonga Pham, the current manager of maintenance and operations of Campus Planning, has been hired as the acting director of Campus Facilities and Sustainability.

Both administrators will be acting in their roles until a competition is held for the positions, which Hanigsberg said would likely be in the next few months once the two new departments are re-organized.

More to come.
