MLSE Doesn’t Want MLG Name Used

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) is seeking an injunction against Ryerson University and Loblaw Companies concerning the naming rights of the school’s new athletic facility, Maple Leaf Gardens (MLG).

MLSE is demanding that Ryerson must stop using MLG’s name in affiliation with their new facility as it infringes on the company’s trademark which may lead to people buying Ryerson products in the belief that they are affiliated with them.

This injunction comes three months before the Loblaws Grocery, which is located on the ground floor of MLG, is set to open.

Although MLG’s opening has constantly been delayed, the $60-million athletic centre is set to open in January 2012. While Sheldon Levy was unavailable for comment due to the fact that he is on vacation, Julia Hanigsberg, who is acting as the school’s interim president, said that she believes Ryerson will come to an agreement with MLSE and that this news will not affect MLG’s timetable.

“This legal proceeding has not even caused a hiccup in [the progress of MLG],” said Hanigsberg. “I think that we will continue to sit down and talk to MLSE and come to an agreement.”

When Ryerson partnered up with Loblaws in December 2009, they saw MLG as being a crucial acquisition that would not only provide their overcrowded athletics department with more space, but help build an identity for the school’s teams.

More to come.
