Canadian indie singer Julie Doiron will be performing at a free show at Ryerson this Saturday afternoon.

Doiron, whose album I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day made waves in the blogosphere in 2009, is performing as part of Studio A Sessions, an acoustic concert series organized by We Have To Go Back, a group of senior radio and television arts students. (Yes, the name is Lost-inspired.)

“We’re bringing in some of Canada’s respected musical talents,” said Bram Gonshor, one of the seven students behind the project. “It’s gonna be fun.”

Studio A Sessions is the students’ practicum project. They were inspired by MTV Unplugged, a Peabody Award-winning series that has recently featured Adele, Vampire Weekend and Lil Wayne.

“It was the first show to expose the artists,” said Gonshor. “There’s always been something about watching a band play very stripped down in front of an intimate audience.”

Gonshor said that student-designed posters for the events will also be sold at the performances, will all proceeds going to the Carlo Fidani Peel Regional Cancer Centre.

Doiron’s performances will take place in the Rogers Communication Centre at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. Harlan Pepper and Donovan Woods will be performing on Nov. 26., and Hooded Fang is slated for Dec. 3. The students plan to film each show, combine the footage and post the final product on SpiritLive.net in January.

“This doesn’t happen all the time at Ryerson where bands come in willingly to play a free show for you,” said Gonshor. “Why wouldn’t you want to go?”
