City Council approves Gould Street closure

City Council voted to permanently close portions of Gould Street and Victoria Street on Monday.

The item was passed by the Toronto and East York Community Council at their meeting on Jan. 10 and brought before the city for final approval.

Under the adopted motion, portions of both streets are now permanently closed to traffic for at least five years. The decision will then be reviewed.

In August 2011, they were deemed a pedestrian zone as part of a 12-month pilot project proposed by the City of Toronto’s Transportation Services.

Ryerson used Gould Street as a recreational space in which outdoor furniture was placed and campus events were held.

The community council decided to block the street when the project ended in September 2011 until a permanent decision was reached.
