Ryerson’s women’s soccer team (0-3-0) dropped its home opener on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to the Trent Excalibur.
After grabbing an early lead with a goal from fifth-year forward Elyse Hanec, the Rams gave up two unanswered scores, including one in the 75th minute. Rams coach Kevin Souter attributed the loss to mistakes and undisciplined play.
“We had our chances [to score] and we didn’t finish them off,” said Souter. “[And when] you give up silly fouls here and there, it hurts you.”
Ryerson had the bulk of scoring chances in the first half, but Trent took over in the second. After allowing the late second goal, the Rams moved everyone up the field to increase the chance for an equalizer. While this plan provided more scoring opportunities, it also gave Trent a plethora of scoring chances, including many breakaways. But after the game, Souter was unapologetic.
“When you’re chasing with 10 minutes to go, you’re willing to take those chances,” he said. “ It doesn’t matter if you lose 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1, you try to win.”
The men’s soccer team (1-1-0) had a more favourable result, dominating Trent’s men in a 3-0 victory. Milos Scepanovic scored the winner in the 27th minute, with Armin Tankovic and Luka Lee adding scores in the 55th and 66th minutes, respectively.
Both games were played at St. Michael’s College.
