Rams win huge, beat Gaels 78-47

By Michael Grace-Dacosta

The Ryerson men’s basketball team continued their winning ways on Friday, thrashing the Queen’s Gaels 78-47.

The all-around beat down was led by Ostap Choliy, a transfer student from York University. Playing in his first game as a Ram, he put up 18 points and 10 rebounds.

“I haven’t played in a year and a half now [so] I was looking forward to playing again,” said Choliy. “At first I had no legs — I’m still getting my cardio back — but it was good to score. It gave me a little confidence down the stretch. It was just good to contribute.“

Choliy’s performance didn’t go unnoticed.

“It was good for his first game as a Ram. I thought he played quite well on both ends of the floor,” said head coach Roy Rana.

The Rams played stifling defense, holding Queen’s to 26 per cent shooting from the field and just four points in the second quarter.

“It was important for us to have a better defensive effort. The last two games we’ve kind of been a little bit sloppy, [so] it was nice to see us get back to that,” said Rana.

With the win, Ryerson’s record stands at 12-2, good for second in the OUA East. The Rams’ next game is Feb. 1, when they host Choliy’s former team, the York Lions.
