Rams win close over York

By Michael Grace-Dacosta

The Ryerson men’s basketball team extended their winning streak to three games on Friday, defeating the York Lions 73-69.

“They’re a better team than people give them credit for and they gave us a great game,” said Rams head coach Roy Rana.

The Rams were led offensively by Aaron Best, who finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Jahmal Jones struggled, shooting just 3 for 13 from the field.

“He had a tough one today, that’s all. He picked those up two fouls and it kind of took it out of him a little bit,” said Rana. “Aaron was very good tonight, and Jeremiah Wheatle came off the bench and [gave] us a huge lift.”

This was the first time the Rams’ new shooting guard Ostap Choliy, who had 11 points, played against his former team.

“I was little bit nervous but excited at the same time.  I’m friends with a lot of them still. It was good seeing them again, playing against them again,” said Choliy. “It was kind of like the old times, but at the end of the day we wanted to compete and get the win.”

Longtime York point guard David Tyndale also had mixed emotions after the game.

“It’s hard to see Ostap on [another] team… I miss playing with him,” said Tyndale, now in his fifth year with the Lions. “I’m cheering for him. When it comes to the playoffs I’m cheering for us, but if we’re out before [Ryerson] I’m on his side. If not, I don’t like him — he’s my enemy,” said Tyndale.

Ryerson moves to 13-2 on the season and have sole control of second place in the OUA East.

The Rams will look to avenge one of their only two losses when they host the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday at 8 p.m. at the MAC.
