Rye hosts Idle No More rally

More than 50 people gathered in front of Lake Devo to sing and learn about the Idle No More movement in a demonstration of solidarity on Monday afternoon.

“It’s not just Aboriginal people taking a stand against government, this is about Aboriginal people taking a stand for all of us as Canadians,” said Earl Lambert, a motivational speaker of Cree descent.

Lambert rapped original lyrics about the turbulent history and unifying purpose of Idle No More to an instrumental version of Bad Meets Evil’s “Lighters.” He joined a host of First Nations representatives and allies who experimented with song, speeches and instruments to spread awareness in the heart of Ryerson’s campus at Gould and Victoria streets.

“[Idle No More] is a culturally diverse movement here in Toronto.

I think this is the heart of what it’s all about,” Lambert said. “And the more that the Hindus see another Hindu standing up, the more Asians see another Asian standing up … the more it gives them the strength, the courage to take a stand too.”
