Wright drops 29, Rams top Blues

The Ryerson women’s basketball team picked up a big 78-63 win on Friday over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Rams needed to win just one of their two games this weekend to secure fourth place in the OUA East.

“Tonight was probably our best night,” said point guard Cassandra Nofuente, the team’s leading scorer this season. “We basically just focused on defense and from that we let our offense flow through it.”

The Rams got off to a quick start, leading by 7 at the half. And while U of T managed to come back and take a one point lead in the third quarter, the Rams closed out strong — outscoring the Blues 24-8 in the fourth quarter.

“We talked about three keys this week in practice — rebounding, controlling the tempo and making sure we didn’t let them get out in transition,” said head coach Carly Clarke. “I thought we did a really, really good job in all three areas.”

Fourth-year guard Kelcey Wright led the team with 29 points — a career high.

“U of T has always been her rival,” said Nofuente. “I’m guessing that she just wanted to just shoot the lights out tonight, as much as she could.”

Wright was quick to praise her teammates after the win.

“I think we played with confidence and composure,” said Wright. “We did exactly what we worked on all week.”

The Rams host the season finale on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the MAC, before hosting the Queen’s Gaels in their first-round playoff game on Wednesday.
