The Ryerson women’s soccer team lost to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-0 on Sunday at Varsity Centre.
“A disappointing game from our perspective,” said Ryerson head coach Kevin Souter. “We were slow out of the gates; we didn’t show a level of commitment and work ethic that I expect. You don’t get away with that against the University of Toronto.”
The Blues (3-2-1) outshot Ryerson 11-0 for the game and drew more corners than Ryerson, by a count by 3-0.
As the numbers suggest, Toronto was in the driver’s seat for most of the game.
In the first half the Varsity Blues dominated the Rams (1-4-0) by creating numerous chances, keyed by first-year defender Christine Mulligan’s tally in the 23rd minute to give the Blue’s a 1-0 lead.
U of T midfielder Alyssa Golin gave the Rams headaches in the first half – creating multiple scoring opportunities with her speed.
“We shut down their left side which is one of their most predominant sides, and most productive sides, in (captain) Aisha Lewis. [But] as a team, we neglected that they have another side that is also quite dangerous,” said Souter.
The Rams picked up momentum in the second half, and although they created some chances, they weren’t able to get any shots on net.
“[At halftime] I demanded more work ethic, more heart and desire. The players that came out on the field certainly gave us that,” said Souter.
Striker Alexandra Rocha ended any hope Ryerson had of a comeback with her goal in the 79th that put Toronto up 3-0.
Despite allowing three goals, first-year goal-keeper Rebecca Peterocelli played wonderfully, making eight saves- many of which came as one-on-one situations.
“She’s made a number of fantastic saves,” said Souter of his starter, who has played in all five games. “I don’t think any of the goals that were conceded were to blame on our goal-keeper.”
Ryerson defender Katrina Gonyea left the game after getting a cut while battling for the ball in air. It is unknown if she’ll be available for the Rams next game.
“We’ll have to wait till those stitches and that wound heals up. It’s a big loss for us,” said Souter.
The Rams will play their next game against the Trent Excalibur, in a rare Wednesday meet at Downsview Park.
