Rams blanked by Varsity Blues

By Luke Galati

The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team lost 1-0, in hard fought game against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday at Monarch Park Stadium, losing their first game since Sept. 15.

Varsity Blues’ striker Aisha Lewis netted her fifth goal of the season at the 32 minute mark, which would prove to be the difference in the game, where Ryerson was outshot 5-3.

“We gave up a soft goal, which is a nagger for me,” said head coach Kevin Souter. “We played well, the effort was there, [the referees] missed a couple of penalties, but the girls worked hard.”

Coach Souter went on to add that Ryerson gave the Varsity Blues too much respect and because the Rams were a team that the Blues beat in the past, they were mentally intimidated.

“The next step is believing we’re in the game with them,” said Souter.

Rams first-year midfielder Emma Abdul was all over the field on Sunday and earned one shot on goalkeeper Sara Petrucci.

“We played really well in the first 15 [minutes], but the rest of the game we were chasing, which isn’t our game,” said Abdul.

“All week we were practicing how to play against Toronto and the goal definitely could have been prevented,” said Ryerson midfielder Nicole Paiva.

During the game, Ryerson was showing its spirit through the Think Pink fundraiser for breast cancer awareness for St. Michaels Hospital. All of the Ryerson players were sporting the bright pink T-shirts, which, for volunteers Kanesha Pike and Tinoa Taylor, was part of a successful day.

“The community has been great, people are walking by and donating money to support the cause,” said Taylor, who helped raise over $200 on Sunday.

The Rams will look to get another point streak going this weekend against Laurentian and Nipissing, starting this Saturday in Sudbury, Ont.
