Rams drop final home game of the season

By William Brown

The Ryerson Rams woman’s soccer team dropped their final home game of the season on Sunday afternoon in a gritty 2-1 decision against the Queen’s University Gaels at Monarch Park Stadium.

Ryerson’s Karena Evans opened the scoring for the Rams 10 minutes in before the Gaels equalized courtesy of Alexis McKintey’s long range goal with a dozen minutes left in the first half.

At the 55 minute mark, Rachel Radu tapped in her sixth goal of the year, after being left open in the box following a Ryerson turnover and had no problem delivering Rachel Colarossi’s hard centering pass past Ryerson’s keeper, Rebecca Petrocelli and into the back of the net.

It was a gutsy performance by both sides, as both the Rams and the Gaels came ready to play a physical game. In particular, Ryerson fullback, Sarah Slattery made several aggressive but successful tackles, defending Petrocelli’s net with strong sliding challenges and brave plays.

Just before half-time, Ryerson’s Amy Tahmizian went down with an apparent ankle injury after making a rough tackle on Radu, who also seemed hurt on the play. Both players were on the ground for two minutes, but both managed to stay in the game.

Evans opened the scoring in the 10th minute, as she steadily moved the ball horizontally towards the goal before shooting from the top of the box over the Queen’s keeper and into the top corner.

The Gaels drew even before the end of the first half with McKintey’s goal. McKintey floated the ball over the Ryerson keeper, just low enough to squeeze under the crossbar. McKintey’s left-footed strike stands as her first of the year.

It was an even affair in which Ryerson missed several chances to equalize.

Ryerson’s best opportunity came in the final seconds of the game. With the Rams pressing for an equalizer, the ball came to Katlyn Rocha after a scramble in front of the Gaels’ net, but her shot was blocked by a defender.

The Rams are in Peterborough on Wednesday to take on Trent, before heading to Ottawa on the weekend to finish up the season against Carleton and the University of Ottawa.
