Ryerson’s women’s volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 22-25) against the York Lions at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Saturday night.

Rams outside hitter Emily Nicholishen had a game-high 15 kills and libero Chelsea Jensen had a team-high 11 digs as the Rams surrendered their first loss of the season.

Opposite side hitter Brandie Wilkerson led York with 13 kills and libero Jennifer Black had a game-high 15 digs, as the Lions  won their fourth straight game in the young season.

After York (4-0) jumped out to a 7-2 in the first, the Rams (3-1) scored 14 of the next 22 points and took the lead in the set.

However, after calling a timeout, York scored three straight points and took the set 25-23.

“We didn’t execute very well in the key moments and against York you can’t wait for them to make mistakes,” said Rams head coach Dustin Reid.

York started the second set strong, going on a 10-4 run forcing the Rams to call a timeout. Fresh off the bench,  first-year outside hitter Kristine Yan made her presence known immediately, coming up with a huge block and scoring back-to-back kills in her first few minutes on the court.

Despite Yan’s strong game in the second frame the Rams lost the set 23-25.

The Rams started the set up 3-1 when York battled to the tie. The teams exchanged until Nicholishen’s kill gave the Rams a 16-15 lead with the technical timeout being called.

York regained the lead after that and held on to win the set 25-22, en route to triple straight sets victory.

“We could have won anyone of those sets but we have a chance to learn from it,” said Reid.  “I think it’s more important for us to grow and improve instead of ask what could have been and what we should have done.”

The Rams next play on Oct. 27 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre when they host the Nipissing Lakers.
