Ryerson’s 3rd Annual Social Justice Week Rebuilding the WE: This is What Solidarity Looks Like got underway on campus Monday.
A small demonstration was held at noon on the corner of Gould and Victoria streets and speakers that included Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) workers and Ceclia Greyson, the sister of John Greyson who was just released from a Cairo prison after being held for seven weeks.
On Saturday Oct. 5 John Greyson and Tarek Loubani, were freed from a Cairo jail where they had spent 51 days. They were unexpectedly kept from boarding a plane Sunday Oct. 6 out of Cairo and are believed to be in their hotel room in the city.
Ceclia spoke to her brother earlier and she said, “He sounded very good, he sounded very healthy. I know they are in a safe location in Cairo.”
“They are getting adjusted to life on the outside of prison, so they are doing well.”
Also in attendance was Ryerson president Dr. Sheldon Levy, and Ryerson faculty Marusya Bociurkiw and Lila Pine and CUPE 1281 local workers.
This rally marks the World Day for Decent Work.
“We are here to ask the community to help us get back to the negotiating table,” said locked-out CESAR Shahla Navai. CESAR workers have been lock-out since September 30 and it is not certain when they will be allowed to go back to work.
