Ryerson’s men’s volleyball team returned home after three weeks on the road to beat the Queen’s Gaels 3-2 (25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 18-16) Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
With the score tied 16-16 in the fifth set, Marc Reardon took over, landing two powerful kills to secure the win. The heroic moment came only a week after his career game on the road against Western. But Reardon said it was the guys setting him up who should get the credit.
“Middles can’t swing unless we have good passing,” he said. “So I have to give props to the passers because they let me swing.”
Reardon finished with eight kills in total, but it was Robert Wojcik again who led the Rams offence.
Wojcik had 20 kills on 41 attempts while Alex Dawson landed 14 kills on 36 attempts. Wojcik also had two service aces in the game, giving him an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) leading 16 this season.
Still, assistant coach Chris McLaughlin said the team needs to work on closing out games, especially after Queen’s was able to come all the way back from down two sets.
“We’ve had six of our nine games go to five sets so it’s been a crazy season,” he said. “I think it’s good for us because it builds character for the playoffs.”
When asked if too many long games will wear his team down, McLaughlin said the players were in good enough shape to withstand the extra work.
And with two games left against the Royal Military College and University of Toronto before the break, he is hopping the team can end this half on a high note.
“I don’t want to push our luck, but hopefully we can go into the break with only three losses,” Reardon said.
The win came in Ryerson’s first home game in the month of November.
The Rams next game is against Royal Military College (0-6) Saturday at 8 p.m.
