Men’s basketball crushes Algoma University

By Michael Grace-Dacosta

The Ryerson men’s basketball team defeated the Algoma University Thunderbirds, 70-42, at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC) Saturday night.

Rams (13-3) point guard Jahmal Jones led all scorers with 20 points and centre Kadeem Green chipped in with 13.

Thunderbirds (4-10) forward Terrell Campbell scored a team-high 18 points paired with nine rebounds.

The Rams and Thunderbirds shot a combined 16 per cent from the field in the first quarter.

“We started out flat,” Jones said. “I guess we were a little fatigued because [we were playing on back-to-back nights] at the start of the game.”

Despite their poor shooting, the Rams led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. Then the Thunderbirds went on a 9-4 run to open the second quarter and cut the Rams lead to three.

Jones hit a heavily-contested three pointer to ignite a 7-0 Rams run.

“He’s [playing well] every night so we can’t help but be pleased,” Rams’ head coach Roy Rana said.

The Rams pulled away in the third quarter, starting the frame on a 13-2 run. At one point, the Rams even had twice as many points as their opponents (50-25).

“We weren’t as urgent as we needed to be till the third quarter,” Jones said. “We got a wake up call [at halftime].”

The Rams held the Thunderbirds to just 20 per cent shooting from the field.

The Thunderbirds are last in the CIS in field goal percentage and second to last in points per game.

The Rams will look to avenge their losses against Carlton University and Ottawa University, the first and second ranked teams in the CIS, next weekend at home.

“[It’s] a big weekend for us as a program,” Jones said. “But I don’t think we’re going to think too much about it until the day comes.”

The Rams’ next game is against the Ottawa Gee-Gees at 8 p.m. Friday night at the MAC.
