The Ryerson men’s hockey team clinched a playoff spot as they defeated the Laurier University Golden Hawks 3-2 Saturday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (MAC).
Rams’ Victor Terreri scored early in the first, netting his seventh goal of the season. Ryerson earned two big points as they inched closer to the playoffs.
“I thought we were pretty average, we found a way to battle it out and get the two points,” assistant coach John Duco said. “At this point we’ll take anything we can get moving towards the playoffs.”
The Rams had been on a three game losing streaks leading up to Saturday’s game.
In the first period, the Rams came out fast — with Terreri scoring 6:47 into the first period. Two Golden Hawk penalties enabled the Rams to play within the offensive zone for large portions of the period.
“It was a give and go with Andreacchi, and I just tried to throw it on net and luckily it went through,” Terreri said.
Both teams fought back and forth in the second. Jamie Wise scored his 21st goal of the season to put the Rams up 2-0 and Laurier’s forward Joe Vanni responded with a power play goal to make it 2-1.
In the third period, Rams’ defenseman Mark Corbett scored his second goal of the year to give Ryerson a 3-1 lead. But the Golden Hawks didn’t go down without a fight. Forward Brent Vandenberg scored with two minutes to go, making it a one-goal game.
Despite late game heroics from Laurier, the Rams managed to hold on for the win — giving them two points with only two games left in the regular season.
“The two points tonight was huge, we’ve go to be on a roll going into the playoffs, we can’t be down,” Terreri said. “Hopefully we’ll get some momentum and get two more big wins.”
The Rams next home game is Feb. 12 against the University of Toronto Blues at 11:30 a.m. at the MAC.
