Time capsule to be buried in the new Student Learning Centre

By Nicole Schmidt

Ryerson is looking to preserve modern day student life by creating a time capsule to be buried in the staircase of the new Student Learning Centre (SLC).

Although the SLC isn’t set to open until 2015, an official ceremony will take place in July to bury the time capsule.

“I think it’s a good idea and I think it’s important as a school and a community to be proud of where we came from and to look forward to where we’re going,” said Abbie Chalmers, a second-year radio and television arts student. “I think that a time capsule is a great way of symbolizing this aspect of the Ryerson community.”

An online survey has been created to allow the Ryerson community to vote on items that should be placed in the capsule, as well as make further suggestions. Current ideas include: a USB key, Eggy memorabilia, a 3-D printing of the SLC building, an item representing Sheldon Levy, a Ryerson OneCard, a Salad King menu, a book barcode and an item representing Egerton Ryerson.

Chalmers thinks that a plush Eggy toy should be included in the capsule so that future generations can compare the quality of the fabric. Others, like third-year politics student Mitchell Demars, suggested items like a Subway sandwich, Daft Punk’s newest album, a $20 bill and a photo of Yonge-Dundas Square.
