Recap: what you missed this summer

Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre will be the home for basketball at the Pan Am and Parapan Am games next July.

With 7,000 athletes from 41 countries across North, South and Central America competing in 36 Pan Am and 15 Parapan Am sports, the Pan Am games is the third largest multi-sport event in the world. The Toronto games will mark the third time Canada has held the event, with Winnipeg hosting in both 1967 and 1999.

“Ryerson is very excited to be sharing its magnificent athletic centre with fans and athletes from across the Americas,” said Ryerson President Sheldon Levy.

In preparation for the Parapan Am games, Ryerson hosted the 2014 Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in June. Canada won gold, Germany silver and the Netherlands bronze.

The Pan Am games will run from July 10 to 26 with the Parapan Am games following from Aug. 7 to 15.

Rams volleyball player gets bronze on beach

Ryerson Ram Kristina Vlcek won the bronze medal in beach volley-ball at the Ontario Championships in Ashbridge’s Bay.

Four Rams, Adam Anagnostopoulos, Jeff Ardron, Lucas Coleman and Will Otten won the gold medal with Team Ontario at the National Team Challenge Cup in Gatineau, Que. Ardron and Coleman also travelled to El Salvador with the U21 national team and won silver at the NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championships.

Badminton star competes in Spain

Ryerson’s Vivian Kwok gained some international experience with Team Canada at the 13th World University Badminton Championship in Spain.

Men’s basketball coach works with NBA

Men’s basketball coach Roy Rana worked as a guest coach with the Utah Jazz during the NBA summer league.

He also coached Canada’s national junior team, which won the silver medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Colorado in June.
