Rams held to one goal against Queens

By Ben Shelley

Ryerson’s women’s soccer team suffered their fourth loss of the season Sunday afternoon at the hands of the Queens Gaels.

The Rams played hard throughout the match, with the game itself being much closer than the 3-0 score let on. However, the Rams were ultimately unable to recover after finding themselves in a two goal deficit going into the half.

The Gaels wasted little time, with forward Jenny Wolever scoring just two minutes into the game. Then, after spending most of the remainder of the half in Ryerson’s end, Queens scored again when Laura Callender increased the lead to two in the 38th minute.

Early in the second half, Wolever capitalized on a header, scoring her second of the game to give Queen’s a 3-0 lead. However, the remainder of the second half was much different, with the Rams spending much of the time on the attack. Ryerson tried to generate offence, but failed when opportunities such a corner kicks and throw-ins went by without leading to any scoring chances.

“As the year goes on we move into more attack,” said Ryerson’s assistant coach Kristina Cook. “We’re starting to now move into higher expectations on attack.”

Lack of offence has been hurting the Rams lately, with Ryerson having only scored one goal in their last three games. Despite the scoring problems, Rams’ midfielder Nicole Paiva was happy with Ryerson’s play in the back half of the game.

“The second half was a lot better than the first,” said Paiva. “We were more energetic, we brought more heat to them, we were pressuring the ball, they were making mistakes, so we had a couple of more shots.”

The Rams’ next game will be played on Oct. 3, when Ryerson travels to Oshawa to take on the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks.
